What is a Paraben?
Parabens are an antiseptic, antioxidant preservative used in cosmetics and sometimes food. They are used to keep molds, bacteria and other microorganisms out of food and personal care products. You will commonly see parabens listed on the ingredients labels as: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and ethylparaben.
Are Parabens Safe?
Experts say that 85% of all personal care products contain parabens. These parabens – found in shampoo, make-up, lotions, shaving gel, etc – are absorbed through the skin. Experts are paying attention and it is now thought that these parabens can be linked to breast cancer.
The CDC has found that women have a much higher level of parabens concentrated in their bodies. We all know women are more likely to apply more skin care products in a day than men are, so this is no surprise. They are also being found in the tissues of marine mammals like dolphins and polar bears, so they are getting into our water supply – scary, right?
Parabens are known endocirine disruptors. They mimic how estrogen works in the body and have been found in the breast tissues and tumors of almost 100% of breast cancer patients.
In fact, the European Union has banned some parabens in cosmetics and tightly regulates their use in other products, like food. Hello? Why are they still allowed in the US?
What Are We Doing to Keep You Safe?
Reading articles and studies on parabens was one of the defining moments in owner, Eliza Russell’s, decision to create a healthy, safe and luxurious skin and body care company. Eliza decided to do this when she was pregnant with her first daughter, Paisley. Paisley entered the world much earlier than expected, and Eliza was so happy she had made that decision for this fragile little girl. Paisley has never been exposed to a paraben and her parents plan to keep it that way.
Vintage Body Care PROMISES to keep parabens out of their products. Instead, we spent countless hours researching trending alternative preservatives. We ultimately decided to preserve our products with naturally occurring probiotic ferments – those from the radish and coconut.
We have tested our products at an outside lab to ensure that the preservative system we have chosen works for it’s intended purpose. Click here to see how these tests work.
Please, get comfortable reading ingredients labels for everything you put in and on your body. Your health is in your hands.
Love yourself. Love your skin.
